The Needham, Massachusetts, community is mourning the sudden death of Needham High School junior Elijah Chen, whose passing has left classmates, teachers, friends and family members grieving.

Elijah died suddenly Monday, according to Superintendent Dan Gutekanst. His cause of death was not immediately disclosed, and the circumstances surrounding his passing have not been publicly provided.

Elijah was a well-known member of the Needham High School community and had many friends among the school’s football and track teams. His death has been especially difficult for those who knew him through athletics, academics and everyday life at the school.

Elijah was also a brother to two younger siblings who attend High Rock School and Pollard Middle School. His family is now facing an unimaginable loss as the community comes together to offer support and condolences during this difficult time.

Following the news, students in Elijah’s classes have been receiving support from Needham High School administrators and staff. The school has made counseling and guidance services available to students who may be struggling with grief or finding it difficult to process the sudden loss of a classmate.

The Needham Police Department also brought emotional support dogs, Rocket and Ghost, to the school to spend time with students throughout the day. Additional guidance and counseling services will continue to be offered as needed.

Superintendent Gutekanst acknowledged how difficult the news is for the school community, particularly because it involves a young person, and asked Needham families to keep Elijah’s family in their thoughts and prayers.
